DESCRIPTION
Sourced from a vineyard planted in 2003 on the lower south-facing slopes of Bakenkop hill, this Syrah grows in ancient, stony shale soils between 50–80m elevation, just 9 km from the Atlantic. Organically farmed since 2015, the vineyard yielded just 6.2 tons/ha in 2021. Grapes were hand-harvested and fermented with 35% whole-bunch; the remainder destemmed into a two-ton open fermenter. Spontaneous fermentation began after a two-day soak, with punchdowns three times daily. After 14 days, the wine was pressed and matured in seasoned 225L French oak for nine months. Only 1,194 bottles were produced. Bottled at 13%. (Bottle size 750ml)
TASTING NOTES
Nose: Perfumed and savoury, with fynbos and lilies interwoven with cracked black pepper. Blueberry, red plum, and purple plum emerge, lifted by floral and spicy top notes.
Palate: Medium-bodied and elegant, showing layers of ripe blueberry and plum alongside roasted beetroot, star anise, and clove. A thread of savoury spice underscores the fruit, while freshness keeps the palate lifted.
Finish: Long and dry, with chalky tannins and a crushed-stone minerality that adds definition. The echo of fruit and spice lingers with precision and poise.
