The Lowlands stretch across southern Scotland below the Highland Line and form one of the country’s legally protected whisky regions. Historically known for supplying spirit to the blending industry, the area is now home to a growing number of distilleries, from long-established names like Auchentoshan, Glenkinchie and Bladnoch to newer producers such as Kingsbarns and Lindores Abbey.
Although regional styles are generalisations, Lowland single malts are often associated with lighter, softer profiles — typically unpeated, with notes of citrus, grassiness and gentle sweetness. As always, flavour depends on each distillery’s production methods and cask choices rather than the region alone.
