Description:

In 2019 Compass Box announced a new label and recipe for The Peat Monster, their heavily peated blended malt Scotch whisky. The new label dubbed “The Painting Label”, showcases artwork specially commissioned for The Peat Monster. Comprised of Caol Ila matured in a refill hogshead (64%), Laphroaig matured in a refill hogshead (35%), and a Highland malt blend matured in custom, heavily toasted French oak barrels (1%). Non-chillfiltered, naturally coloured and bottled at 46%. (Bottle size 750ml)

Nose: Peat, marked salinity, leans to Caol Ila in style, something medicinal. Sweet and fruity, grainy.

Palate: Peat, oak. Botanicals, floral, coppery, sweet, smoky bacon, hint of papaya.

Finish: A lingering sweetness, more peat, floral: roses and violets, sweet spice, oak.

Peat Monster

"If you are looking for a peaty whisky to blow your socks off, this is my recommendation. Bit too medicinal for some, otherwise I would give it 4 stars not 3. Strong lingering finish though. Goes well with Oxtail."

Quality

"Not generally a fan of blended whisky, but this is masterful"

Do yourself a favour and research the Compass Box line

"I received this as a gift from someone many years ago and thought it was a joke whisky - the label is silly and looks like a budget gimmicky type of whisky. Wow was I surprised and upon delving deeper into Compass Box I found amazing whiskies. The labels and names don't take themselves serious and breaks the trend of being serious and stuffy about whisky. The first time I have also started looking at blends in a different way - Compass Box creates art. This expression is a beast and does exactly what the label says. The peat is so intense its like drinking bog water - amazing for an Islay lover but can also be overwhelming for some. Its a whisky I bring out if someone is feeling brave or recons they are "peat-heads". I haven't had any of the Octomore range but it defintely beats Laphroaig, Ardbeg and Lagavulin. Its a crisp peatiness with lots of smoke and medicinal notes. Will definitely replace the bottle once its done."

Wonderfully Peaty

"Another great Compass Box expression. Smoky, salty taste with a long lingering peat finish. Excellent on a cold night around a fire"

Peat Monster

"The name says it all but still so approachable"

Smooth

"Compass box has a smooth tase and strong scent. Good bottle to bring to a whisky dram or whisky tasting. Certainly worth the price."

Great value dram

"A gentle monster! Very oily and rich. Definitely not a 3-year old conglomerate - this was purposefully made!"
