A limited-edition blended whisky from boutique blenders, Compass Box. Launched in 2023 as the third release in the Extinct Blends Quartet, a collection of four whiskies that pay homage to styles of Scotch from the past. Metropolis is a nod to the industrial past of blended Scotch and is said to have been inspired from a recently lost blended Scotch whisky with a 'long history', and by the mixing of cultures that happens in cities. Produced from a blend of 25.8% blended malt Scotch whisky aged in a refill sherry butt, 25.1% Aberlour single malt aged in a re-charred American oak barrel, 20.5% blended grain parcel aged in refill bourbon barrels, 16.6% Miltonduff single malt aged in first-fill bourbon barrels, 7.1% Bowmore single malt aged in a refill bourbon barrel, and 4.9% blended Scotch parcel aged primarily in first-fill bourbon barrels. 5,910 bottles were produced. Non-chillfiltered, naturally coloured and bottled at 49%.

Nose: Vanilla arrives first on the nose, followed by a medley of different honeys. Fudge, apricot and pineapple lead to fresh fig.

Palate: A rich and very complex palate with sultana, apricot again and hints of smoky woodiness.

Finish: A long and sweet finish, with a pleasing weight.

Brilliant

"To date for me, this is the standout in the Quartet set. I also think the label/artwork is amazing. It is a tribute the art of blending started in Edinburgh and Glasgow. It is intended to revive the little known Bailie Nicol Jarvie blend. Primarily Aberlour and Miltonduff, with a splash of Bowmore - the components are well aged and as expected deliver a beautiful integrated whisky in true CB style. Nose: Vanilla, Caramel, Honey, Stone Fruits, hints of chocolate and a touch of smoke. Taste: Fudge, Honey, Sultanas, Stone Fruits (apricot) and again those hints of smoke. I also get some lovely chocolate notes. Finish: Long and more smoke and peat than suggested by the recipe and the nose. Hints of the honey remain for me, maybe a hint of oakiness right at the end."
