DESCRIPTION

A small batch release from an undisclosed distillery in Speyside, starting with the letter 'M', bottled by Signatory independent bottler in their 100 Proof Exceptional Cask range. Distilled in 2009, matured for 16 years in Oloroso sherry butts and bottled in late 2025. Non-chillfiltered, naturally coloured and bottled at high strength of 57.1%.

NOTES FROM THE WB TEAM

The 57.1% used in this 100 Proof range is a nod to the traditional British proof system, a historic method of measuring alcohol strength that predates modern ABV (alcohol by volume) standards. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the British Navy required a reliable method to verify the strength of spirits to ensure they weren’t being watered down. The test involved soaking gunpowder with the spirit and attempting to ignite it. The point at which gunpowder would reliably ignite was eventually standardized in 1816 as 100 proof, which corresponded to 12⁄13 alcohol by weight, or approximately 57.15% ABV. This was the official British proof system until it was replaced by ABV in 1980.
