Originally released in 1988 as part Diageo's Classic Malts range which showcased select single malts from across Scotland in the company's large whisky portfolio. Lagavulin 16yo is the flagship release from this iconic distillery and a classic whisky that every new whisky drinker should try, while still offering experienced drinkers a level of complexity they can appreciate. Matured predominantly in ex-bourbon oak casks with a portion of ex-sherry. Bottled at 43%.

Nose: Intensely flavoured, peat smoke with iodine and seaweed and a rich, deep sweetness.

Palate: Dry peat smoke fills the palate with a gentle but strong sweetness, followed by sea and salt with touches of wood.

Finish: A long, elegant peat-filled finish with lots of salt and seaweed.

Lovely but used to be better

"Its lovely stuff certainly...and deserves a place in most whisky collections. First drank Laga in around 1995. And have had many bottles since. It has in my opinion changed slightly. Its a bit more rounded and muted. The color has definately changed. My dad has a bottle he bought around 7 years ago and it seems to be less bright than my current bottle. Why put e150 in this stuff at all....it doesnt need it. But apart from that small gripe its very good!"

"While some might say that this is overrated, I am certainly not one of them. This is a very important whisky among most whisky aficionados, and for good reason. It is simply very well balanced between the smoke, sweetness, maritime notes, and richness. Definitely a must-have!"

"Another good and strong memory! Somewhat between smoky and rich flavour, this whisky has a lot to be remembered for. With a slight meaty aroma that turns into strong orange and pineapple on the palate, every sip of the 16 YO lagavulin deserves all the time needed to fully appreciate its long spicy finish."

"In terms of whiskies that are available as a standard releases, the Lagavulin 16yo is an all-time classic. It is peaty/smoky, but the age and sherry cask influence provide support for the smoke and result in a whisky that is balanced and complex. If you haven't tried it, you are missing out on a legendary whisky."
