The grapes for the Holden Manz Merlot Reserve 2017 were harvested on 1 and 3 March 2017. Hand-selected bunches underwent individual berry selection to ensure only the best fruit was fermented. 100% of the fruit was fermented as berries in barrel. All fermentation was spontaneous (wild) with no commercial yeast added. Matured for 22 months in 70% new French oak barrels. A total of 1,714 bottles were produced. Bottled at 15%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Red cherry dominates with subtle cedar, fynbos and wild fig.
Palate: Red cherries on entry with a complex mid-palate and a mocha finish – very moreish.
Finish: Soft round tannins with some tension on the finish.
Located in the top, southernmost corner of the Franschhoek Valley, the Holden Manz wine estate is named after owners Gerard Holden and Migo Mans who first arrived in South Africa in the 1990s. Winemaker Thierry Haberer grew up in Corsica, completing his studies at the University of Bordeaux in 2004. His experience includes working as a freelance winemaker at Anthonij Rupert Cellar (South Africa), Rudd Estate (USA) and Katarzyna Estate (Bulgaria). In 2008 he joined forces with one of France’s best-known wine consultants, Michel Rolland before moving to South Africa a few years later.
