DESCRIPTION

First released in 1999, this multi-award winning, flagship bourbon is produced at the Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky, considered to be the oldest continuously operating distillery in America. Produced using a mashbill that favours corn, less than 10% rye and less than 5% malted barley, resulting in sweeter, less spicy, softer-styled bourbon. Matured in charred, new American oak barrels. Bottled at 45%.

TASTING NOTES

Nose: Aromas of vanilla, mint and molasses.

Palate: Pleasantly sweet to the taste with notes of brown sugar and spice that give way to oak, toffee, dark fruit and anise.

Finish: Long and smooth with good depth and spice, cinnamon gum and toffee.

"This is my go to Bourbon. Without a doubt one of the best bang for your buck bourbons on the market. I got to visit the distillery in 2019 and I have been hooked ever since. Few bourbons at this price have the range of sophisticated flavours of Buffalo Trace for many reasons, not least of these owning to the fact that it has been aged longer than most bourbons in this range."

Tracing the Roots

"This bourbon is well balanced, and you can definitely smell and taste the age here, which is around 8 years. Nice oak and spicy notes, you can definitely tell that rye is the other main grain used beside corn. It's tough to think of anything else that is still quality which competes with it at this price. Nice entry to the Buffalo Trace distillery, where so many barrels used for the production of other whiskies all around the world originate."

Affordable Bourbon

"With the ridiculous markup that bourbon sees in South Africa, it's great that some drams are still more affordable locally than they are in the EU/UK. Buffalo Trace is not going to be lauded as the best bourbon ever crafted but it is, for my money, the best gateway into American whisky - let alone bourbon. I'm a fan of Maker's but I don't think there's a justified difference in price-quality to choose that over Buffalo. If you are starting out with bourbon, or you're on budget, this is your go to!"
