The 2019 release from Ardbeg sees the unveiling of the Drum, a celebration of Islay’s rich history of carnivals with a flamboyant Caribbean twist and the first ever rum finished whisky to be released by the distillery. Matured in ex-bourbon casks and rested in ex-rum casks from the Americas. Bottled at 46%.

Nose: Smoked apple and pineapple, ripe banana, fragrant pine resin and subtle woodsmoke. Dry cocoa powder, cinnamon and ginger spiced dates and 'floating' lavender notes.

Palate: Peppery texture, huge smoky palate, oil, tar, creosote, rich dark chocolate. A treasure of spices - clove, liquorice and ginger mingles with smoked vanilla.

Finish: Intense smoke on the finish, more spice with a sweet coffee liqueur finish.

Good whiskey - but maybe priced a bit high

"So without going into to much depth pertaining to the rational and reasoning of my review - this is a good whiskey. It has a lot going for it. There is honestly a few notes that are very unique and some that are so unique that they are almost fighting against each other. That in itself is an experience to have. I just think that there is so many other bottles that I would rather pick up at R2.5k that this is probably not high on my "to buy" list. If you do manage to pick it up and a better price by all means. But value for money? I am not convinced. Quality wise 4 / 5 starts. Price wise taken into consideration nothing more than a 3."

A tasty experiment

"Experimentation and innovation are some of the things I value most in whisky, so I love when distilleries opt for different finishes like rum casks. Unfortunately, with new trying new things comes some downsides; Ardbeg Drum is by no means a bad whisky, it's Ardbeg after all, but the tropical fruit and sweet spice notes just don't play as well with the Ardbeg character as I had hoped. At release price, this one was definitely worth it for the opportunity to try something uniqe (and still quite delicious) and support the distillery, but due to the rarity of the limited releases I believe that there are far better Ardbeg offerings at the secondary market price."
