DESCRIPTION

Introduced in 2014, American Oak is a permanent expression from the Auchentoshan Distillery in the Lowlands. Auchentoshan is unique in Scotland as the only distillery that triple-distils all of its whisky, resulting in a lighter style before maturation even begins. Matured exclusively in first-fill American oak ex-bourbon casks. Bottled at 43%. (Bottle size 750ml)

TASTING NOTES

Nose: Sweet with vanilla, coconut and lemon along with toffee and milk chocolate. Wafts of grassy air and clotted cream.

Palate: Bounty bars, more citrus peels and peaches. A little bit buttery, with golden barley and oak spice developing on the mid palate.

Finish: Lasting notes of grapefruit, spicy oak and toffee.

Great value

"A pretty good whisky, especially at the price point. I preferred it over the 12yo, found this to be a surprisingly smooth drinker, and nicely complex too. Would rate it a 3.5 if I could...it gets an extra .5 here because of value."

Not a bad whiskey - good entry level dram

"Its not a bad whiskey, In actual fact it might even be a fairly decent whiskey. The thing is though for R30 you can get your hands on the 12 year old which I my opinion just has so much value to give for that R30 extra. Honestly, if you can get them both and compare. Hopefully you will be as pleasantly surprised as I was regarding how a small price bump can change an experience. Having said that Auchentoshan is still (always!) a great buy. And who knows, you might prefer this one to the 12 year"

Pretty good

"Don't usually recommend this to anyone but it is well priced. Not a bad to sway a bourbon drinker to Scotch"

Shannon G. (3/5)

A bit odd

"Quite an odd one - starts with dry grass on the nose, a bit of burnt oaky-ness on the palate and then, just as you're walking away and carrying on with your life, there is this lingering finish of ash. Almost like the before, middle and after a bushfire in every sip."

A favourite to have

"Probably the one whiskey that is always in my house. I just keep buying it again and again."

Roelof B. (4/5)

Interesting blend

"A smooth and unusual but interesting blend that is very easy on the palate and smooth to the nose. A very affordable introduction offering great value"

Gary E. (4/5)

Great transition

"If you are a bourbon drinker and have not acquired the taste for single malts yet this is the perfect start. The American oak casks really create a beautiful easy drinking dram."

Jared P. (4/5)

Well behaved

"For a NAS whisky from lowlands it is not bad to get this results.. still very young but drinkable Some people use it for hot toddy i don’t, i have it neat with dried mangos"

Light and fruity

"If you are a new whisky drinker and your palate still prefers very light and fruity whiskies, this is a perfect summer's afternoon dram. The nose is rich and fruity with with a good amount of citrus that follows through on the palate as well where a sweet hint of vanilla and chocolate also come through. the finish is short and sweet but nice and lite. A great price for an easy drinking whisky."
