Founded on Islay’s south coast, Ardbeg has been producing whisky since 1798 and began full commercial distillation in 1815. For much of its history the distillery’s intensely peated spirit was primarily destined for blended whisky, though it quickly became known for its characterful and smoky style. By the late 19th century Ardbeg was one of the island’s largest producers, making close to 300,000 gallons a year and employing around 60 people.

The distillery faced significant challenges in the late 20th century, closing in 1981 and operating only sporadically through the 1990s. Its revival began in 1997 when Glenmorangie Plc purchased the site, restoring the distillery and returning it to full production in 1998. Now part of the LVMH group, Ardbeg has re-established itself as one of Islay’s most distinctive producers, known worldwide for its deeply peated core range and its imaginative annual limited releases.
