DESCRIPTION
From a vineyard planted in 2017 on the south-facing slopes of Bakenkop hill, just 9 km from the Atlantic Ocean, this Chenin Blanc grows in decomposed shale soils at 100–130m elevation. Farmed organically since its inception, the site yields low crops of concentrated fruit. Grapes were hand-harvested on 31 January 2023 and whole-bunch pressed, followed by overnight settling and fermentation in old French oak (1×300L and 1×500L). Wild yeast carried out fermentation, with full malolactic conversion, and the wine matured on fine lees for nine months. Only 996 bottles were produced. Bottled at 13%. (Bottle size 750ml)
TASTING NOTES
Nose: Floral and expressive, with honeysuckle and orange blossom lifted by notes of apricot, peach, white pear, and tangerine zest. Subtle almond and smoky undertones from lees ageing bring added intrigue.
Palate: Textured and layered, the creamy lees character frames orchard fruit and stone fruit flavours, while citrus zest provides tension. Hints of almond and smoke add savoury depth to the mid-palate.
Finish: Dry, pithy, and refreshing, with a lively seam of acidity that carries the fruit and floral notes to a long, structured close.
