The Saint-Joseph appellation extends around fifty kilometres on the right bank of the River Rhone, from Chavanay in the north to Guilherand-Granges, near Valence, in the south. The mainly-east facing vineyards are planted on the steep slopes of gneiss and local granite schist, occasionally coated with lenses of loess. This variety of substrates enables us to combine complexity, volume and tautness in our Deschants wine. The wine is made from 100% marsanne grapes. On their arrival at the winery, the whole grapes are pressed. A cold-static-settling is performed from 24 to 48 hours. The temperatures of fermentation are regulated by cold water circulation. A part of the wine is vinified in oak casks and the other part in stainless vats. Ageing is carried out on lees with stirrings. The two wines are blended just before bottling (from 8 to 9 months after harvesting). Bottled at 14%. (Bottle size 750ml)

Nose: Mineral, gun-flint (characteristic of the granite), roasted aromas, hint of dried fruits.

Palate: Frank and round entry. Dried tropical fruits such as mango and peach shine through.

Finish: Floral and honeyed finish.

Maison M. Chapoutier's history dates back to 1808 when the company "Calvet et Compagnie" was formed. The Chapoutier family joined the business in 1897 when Marius Chapoutier partnered with Rodolphe Delépine, who later retired in 1922. In 1955 Marc Chapoutier renamed it to M. Chapoutier to symbolise the importance to the family. Today the 3rd generation, Michel Chapoutier, serves as winemaker and is the head of the company. Humility is at the heart of M. Chapoutier's soul. Nature always has the final say. The winemaker observes, decides and guides nature in the most respectful way possible. ‘Fac et spera’ (do and hope), has become the family currency, an ethos which has given rise to three fundamental values Respect, Boldness and Conviviality & Generosity. Since 1996, all Maison M. Chapoutier labels feature the wine information written in braille. This is a tribute to Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne, the inventor of the first abridged version of braille and founder of the Valentin Haüy association, who helped bring the blind and visually challenged out of isolation. There is even a wine that carries his name, from a plot that belonged to his family. This is a way of giving something back to somebody who made a real contribution.
