Klein Constantia Metis Sauvignon Blanc 2017 was inspired by Pascal Jolivet and his holistic approach to winemaking in Sancerre, France. Grapes were harvested by hand from 4am from high lying blocks able to withstand the way in which the wine is made. No sulphur was added at crush and fermentation was wild. The wine was left to mature on the lees for a period of 12 months in a combination of stainless steel tanks as well as 20% neutral oak barrels. Bottled at 13.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Fresh citrus and nettle aromas fill the nose.
Palate: Concentrated and full bodied with a rich peppery and mineral mouth-feel.
Finish: Refreshing and supported by a balanced acidity, the wine concludes with a powerful and flinty finish.
Originally part of Simon van der Stel’s vast Constantia estate, granted in 1685. It then formed part of Groot Constantia until 1823, when the land was divided between brothers Jacob Pieter and Johan Gerhard Cloete. The latter took ownership of the upper reaches, situated on the eastern slopes and foothills of the Constantiaberg, where there were already over 33,000 vines planted. He named this piece of land Klein Constantia. Changing hands several times over the years, in May 2011 Klein Constantia was bought by businessmen Zdenek Bakala and Charles Harman. In June 2012, celebrated Bordeaux wine personalities, Bruno Prats and Hubert de Boüard, merged their Stellenbosch based vineyard, Anwilka, with Klein Constantia.
