Grapes for the Holden Manz Syrah Reserve 2015 were picked on 9 March 2015. Hand-selected bunches of concentrated ripe syrah were cold macerated over an extended period of time prior to barrel fermentation. 100% whole bunch fermented using wild yeast in 225-litre French oak barrels. First year maturation took place in a mix of 500-litre French oak barrels (50% new) and continued for an additional 12 months in a selection of 225-litre French oak barrels. A total of 2,312 bottles were produced. Bottled at 15.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Alluring savoury nose with floral hints of dried violets combined with cinnamon, nutmeg and liquorice.
Palate: Ripe and bold dark fruit, meaty and spicy notes, think Cornas/Hermitage style, smoky, steak tartare, black pepper, rounded tannin.
Finish: A long powerful finish.
Located in the top, southernmost corner of the Franschhoek Valley, the Holden Manz wine estate is named after owners Gerard Holden and Migo Mans who first arrived in South Africa in the 1990s. Winemaker Thierry Haberer grew up in Corsica, completing his studies at the University of Bordeaux in 2004. His experience includes working as a freelance winemaker at Anthonij Rupert Cellar (South Africa), Rudd Estate (USA) and Katarzyna Estate (Bulgaria). In 2008 he joined forces with one of France’s best-known wine consultants, Michel Rolland before moving to South Africa a few years later.
