Spier's flagship wine is named after Cellar Master Frans K Smit. The 2015 Red was made with grapes hand-picked on the slopes of Helderberg. After hand-picking and carefully packing the berries into small 10kg lugs, they were then sorted by hand, crushed, and pumped into small 600-litre roller fermenters. Malolactic fermentation took place in small French oak barrels, followed by an extended period of maturation. Around 24 months after picking, Frans made his selections and started blending the components. In the final blend, a small percentage of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot were added to make this a true Bordeaux style wine. Bottled at 14.5%. (Bottle size 1.5 litre)
Nose: Big cigar box notes.
Palate: Berries, cherries, a faint sensation of mint in the background and savoury undertones of flavour.
Finish: A smooth lengthy finish.
Spier is one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa, with a recorded history dating back to 1692. Cellar Master Frans K Smit and his team have transformed Spier from a small cellar in the 80s into an award-winning Stellenbosch producer.
