De Krans Cape Tawny is produced from Portuguese grape varietals Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Amarella. Selected bunches are hand-picked mid to late February from row selected vines in specific blocks at 26° Balling. Bunches are de-stemmed, crushed and rapidly cooled in a small open fermenter. Grapes are left to spontaneously start fermentation. At the desired sugar-level, the fermentation is stopped by adding alcohol to the juice. The wine is aged in old small 225-litre barrels before being blended from a range of different vintages between 5 and 15 years. Residual sugar: 85.1g/l. Bottled at 18.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Secondary aromas of orange peel, caramel, nuts and toffee.
Palate: Elegant aged flavours of caramel, toffee, roasted nuts and fruitcake.
Finish: A silky finish.
Port is a geographically protected indication, meaning that to be called port it must be made in a specific region of Portugal. Thus, this is not technically a port wine, however, South African has a long tradition of producing port-styled wines in exactly the same process as is done in Portugal.
