Grapes were harvested at 26° Balling from young Touriga Nacional vines and old Tinta Barocca vines planted in 1968, with a yield of 5 ton/ha. Boplaas Cape Port wines are crafted much the same way as the lauded Ports of the Douro Valley utilising full-ripe Portuguese varietal fermented in traditional open fermenters, known as lagares, with intense manual pigeage; fortifying at the correct moment with the finest grape spirit and maturing in barrel for the appropriate length of time according to the style, prior to meticulous blending and bottling lightly filtered. Bottled at 18%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Cherries, plum, blackberries, violets, pepper, spiciness and dark chocolate.
Palate: Expectations are met when you taste the wine - full-bodied with big ripe tannins and integrated alcohol.
Finish: A long and luscious after-taste.
Port is a geographically protected indication, meaning that to be called port it must be made in a specific region of Portugal. Thus, this is not technically a port wine, however, South African has a long tradition of producing port-styled wines in exactly the same process as is done in Portugal.
