Speyburn Single Malt Whisky
Speyburn Distillery was founded in 1897 by John Hopkins & Company, with the site carefully chosen for its clean and reliable water source from the Granty Burn, a tributary of the River Spey. Hopkins appointed renowned distillery architect Charles C. Doig to design the distillery, and Speyburn still retains its classic pagoda roof, a hallmark of Doig’s work.
Production was intended to begin on 1 November 1897 so the first casks could bear the date of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Delays meant distillation only began on 15 December, during a severe snowstorm, with workers operating in a still house that lacked doors and windows. Despite these conditions, the proprietors achieved their goal, and a single butt was filled and bonded with the 1897 date.
Today, Speyburn produces a classic, approachable Speyside style enjoyed around the world and ranks among the top-selling single malt whiskies in the United States. The distillery is owned by Inver House Distillers, whose portfolio also includes Old Pulteney, Balblair, Knockdhu and Balmenach.
