In 2006, three cases of Mackinlay's whisky were found buried under the ice of Antarctica by the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust - having been there since Sir Ernest Shackleton's South Pole expedition between 1907 and 1909. Although Mackinlay's had ceased to exist, whisky maker Whyte and Mackay still owned the brand, so along with their master blended, Richard Paterson, they set about recreating it. After careful analysis of the discovered whisky, and tracing historic records, the Mackinlay's Rare Old Highland Malt was produced. This, the first batch of two limited batches, is a blended malt crafted from Glen Mhor (the original Mackinlay’s distillery before it closed in 1983), Dalmore and other distilleries from across Scotland. Ranging in age from 8 to 30 years, each whisky was matured in American white oak sherry casks. 50,000 bottles were produced. Bottled at 47.3%.

Nose: Crushed apple, pear and fresh pineapple. The spirit is exciting and vibrant with attractive notes of oak shavings that release hints of buttery vanilla, creamy caramel and nutmeg. Marmalade, cinnamon and even a tease of smoke.

Palate: Gentle bonfire smoke give way to spicy rich toffee, treacle and pecan nuts. Lingering on the palate but are soon combined creme brulee, orange rind and freshly baked bread.

Finish: A tapestry of taste sensations which rewards the palate.
