Campbeltown Scotch Whisky

Once known as the whisky capital of the world, Campbeltown boasted over 30 distilleries at its 19th-century height. However, a sharp downturn between the 1920s and 1930s—driven by overproduction, declining quality, economic depression, and the effects of Prohibition—saw the region’s whisky industry collapse almost entirely. Today, only three distilleries remain in operation: Springbank, Glen Scotia, and Glengyle.

Springbank is the most iconic of the trio, though its releases are rarely available due to global demand and limited production. Glen Scotia has seen an impressive resurgence over the past decade, with a growing reputation and a steady stream of both core and limited releases. Glengyle, whose whisky is bottled under the Kilkerran name, is owned and managed by the Springbank team and thus only operates on a small scale.

The future of the region looks promising, with new distilleries planned—Dál Riata, Machrihanish, and Witchburn—poised to restore Campbeltown’s historic prominence.
