Thorne & Daughters Rocking Horse Cape White 2021 Rocking Horse Cape White Blend is the signature wine of Thorne & Daughters, taking its name from a wooden rocking horse that they made for their daughters out of old oak barrel staves. Produced from several grape varietals from a number of carefully selected vineyard sites in the Western Cape: 32% Roussanne - Stellenbosch / Paardeberg – 14 years old - decomposed granite / clay; 29% Semillon Blanc – Franschhoek – 39 years old - alluvial soils; 19% Chardonnay – Ceres Plateau 8 years old – clay; 16% Chenin Blanc – Paardeberg 42 years old - decomposed granite; 4% Clairette Blanche – Swartland 37 years old – decomposed granite. Picking is done early and based mostly on taste. Grapes are whole-bunch pressed and no treatments or additions are used on the juice. The juice is then racked off the heavy solids and taken to old oak barrels of various volumes. The wines are fermented naturally and allowed go through their subsequent malolactic fermentation. Watched carefully for the next few months until they ‘settle down’, at which point sulphur dioxide is added. Bottled at 13%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Notes of hay, wild honey and nut brittle aromas on the nose.
Palate: A rounded, intense palate of honeybush, yellow plums and a subtle gun flint smokiness.
Finish: A long, full-bodied finish.
Thorne and Daughters Wines was started in 2012 by John and Tasha Seccombe to produce authentic wines in the Western Cape where they have made their home. To produce the wines, they’ve drawn on the great history of Cape wine, putting together old vineyard parcels with new grape varieties and making wines with old school simplicity and a modern edge. Their approach to wine making is simple honest and gentle, looking to make wines that tell a story of the Cape of Good Hope.
