Grapes were harvested from vines growing on three different soil types, clay-rich shale derived soil (56%), granite soil (26%) and Table Mountain sandstone derived soil (18%). Each brings a different quality to the wine, clay for the viscous dense texture it brings and sandstone for its structure and aromatics. The juice is portioned, some of it undergoes natural ferment, some is inoculated with organic yeasts and the rest fermented with an endemic cultured yeast. This helps create depth and complexity. To showcase the fine terroir, maturation is predominantly in tank and preserves minerality. A small portion (10%) is matured in older neutral oak barrels again for complexity in flavour. Bottled at 13.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Complex with notes of white flesh fruit like pear, citrus notes like lime and a definitive salinity.
Palate: Very lively on entry with predominantly citrus notes. Orange blossom, lemon zest and limes shine through. Mid-palate is a bit more mineral and chalky in texture.
Finish: Very refreshing with beautifully weighted acidity. A short to medium finish with a salty almost dusty finish.
Southern Right, located on the Western border of Hamilton Russell Vineyards in Hemel-en-Aarde, was founded by Anthony Hamilton Russell in 1994. The 448 hectare property specialises in Pinotage and Sauvignon Blanc. The wines are named after the Southern Right whales, which pass through Walker Bay, just a few kilometers from the vineyards. Southern Right is committed to conservation and each bottle of wine sold contributes to their efforts.
