Named after the vineyard Le Luc (which in turn was named after Graig and Anne's son Luke), this 1.2ha vineyard is the youngest of the four estate vineyards, having been planted by Craig himself in 2013. Two harvests were done a few days apart in early February. Grapes were hand-picked and lightly destemmed, leaving some whole cluster, then naturally fermented in small, open top oak vats. No punch-downs or pump-overs. The cap was kept healthy by wetting the skins by hand. After a natural yeast fermentation, the skins were gently pressed in an old wooden basket press. The wine then went into French oak barriques (25% new) where it was raised sur lie and undisturbed for 12 months. It was then racked from barrel and allowed a few more months to integrate in stainless steel tanks, no fining. Only 3,554 bottles were produced. Bottled at 13.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Very expressive with notes of dark cherry, musk and spice.
Palate: Great fruit purity, with notes of cherries and raspberries greeting you on entry. Mid-palate reveals subtle nuances of savoury and spicy notes.
Finish: Soft tannin structure, lingering notes of dried fruit.
The Restless River label was launched in 2012 and is managed and owned by Craig and Anne Wessels, winemaker and manager respectively. Their farm is located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and has some of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay vines in the region (planted in 1998). Almost all their production is done by hand, resulting in limited quantities of each wine. Being terroir driven, the focus is on 100% single varietal wine with each vineyard on their farm registered as a single vineyard and the wines named after the vineyards.
