Distilled by Still 33 Distillery in Johannesburg, Porkbush Gin's botanicals include Spekboom, which is macerated in neutral spirits and distilled separately at a lower temperature so as not to destroy the delicate essential oils. The other botanicals (juniper berries from the Balkans, Bulgaria and Italy, coriander, cubeb and lemon) are vapour-infused during distillation in the gin head of the column still. The distillates are then combined during proofing. No added sugar. Bottled at 43%. (Bottle size 750ml).
Porkbush Gin was established in 2019 to create awareness around South Africa’s Spekboom plant. Spekboom, also known as Pork Bush or Elephant’s food, is an indigenous "wonder plant"; besides being edible, the medium-sized shrub is resilient and an important 'weapon' in the fight against climate change. This carbon sponge can absorb more than 4 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year per hectare of trees, making it more effective than the Amazon rainforest at sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere!
