As the drought in the Cape began to really bite in 2017, we were forced to supplement our primary grape source and incorporate grapes from a second vineyard into our Swartland Syrah. Grapes came from two sites Kasteelsig and Leeuwenkuil. At Kasteelsig the grapes are unirrigated and farmed organically and the soil is primarily Glenrosa, a composite of decomposed shale with a little granite. Leeuwenkuil has similar soils and the vines are over 25 years old. Sustainable farming practices are used at both farms. Grapes were hand-picked and gently handled. The syrah was fermented in small open bins with hand punch downs several times a day. The wine matured in French and Hungarian oak for a total of 14 months. A total of 5,907 bottles were produced. Our friend Jenny Metelerkamp produced the fine ink drawing for the label. Bottled at 13.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)

Nose: A full-bodied, spicy Syrah with fresh red fruit and intriguing savoury notes.

Palate: Entry has lovely red fruit notes of dates and prunes. Mid-palate has more savoury sweet spice notes of cloves and star anise. Well balanced acidity and tannins lend richness to the wine.

Finish: A lingering, complex finish, with subtle earthy and oak spice notes.
