This is the 2018 release of the Longrow Red series from the team at Springbank. Heavily peated spirit matured for 9 years in ex-bourbon barrels and then finished for 2 years in Cabernet Franc barriques, from De Toren Private Cellar in Stellenbosch. A total of 9,000 bottles were produced. Bottled at a cask strength of 55.9%.
Nose: Initially there’s peat, peat and more peat. After a while red wine notes appear, as well as the sweetness of marzipan, toffee, raspberry jam and Eton mess.
Taste: The peat remains as does the sweet taste of caramelised sugar and toffee apples. This is balanced by fruity flavours of stewed rhubarb and crisp, juicy red apples from the red wine casks. There is also a rich buttery biscuit.
Finish: To finish, there are lovely sooty smoky burnt embers, accompanied by dry oak vanilla tannins.
