Reserve Red 2018 is a vintage blend of the best reds Leeuwenkuil produces from the Swartland region: 65% Shiraz, 20% Cinsault, 10% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre. Grapes were hand-picked at sugars ranging between 21 and 24° Balling. Fermented on skins with natural yeasts and using punch-downs and pump-overs to mix the juice and skins. Skin contact then took place for 20 days to allow for the maximum extraction of tannins. Malolactic fermentation and aging occurred in a 5,000-litre French oak foudres for 12 months. Bottled at 13.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: A distinctive perfume on the nose backed by the aroma of caramelised plums.
Palate: An abundance of pure red fruit: cherries, cranberries and plums.
Finish: A peppery and savoury finish.
Willie and Emma Dreyer are seventh-generation owners of Leeuwenkuil and together they have built Leeuwenkuil into a Swartland institution. The estate on which it is situated was one of the earliest wine farms in the region, having been around since 1693 when it was known as Schinderkuijl. The Dreyer family took ownership of the farm in 1851 after a few sub-divisions, and has since developed it into the estate with the largest acreage of grapevines in South Africa. As one of the Swartland's leading grape growers, Leeuwenkuil played an under-the-radar role until, in 2008, the Dreyer's took the decision to start making and selling wine themselves. 2021 marks a significant milestone as the first vintage to be processed in their own winery on the farm, instead of in rented cellar space.
