Part of Diageo's Special Releases for 2018, this the 18th release of the Lagavulin 12yo. Although these annual releases are limited editions, Diageo do not disclose how many are released each year. Distilled in 2005, matured in refill American oak hogsheads and bottled in 2018. Bottled at a natural cask strength of 57.8%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: A powerful smouldering peat smokiness, with rich aromas of coal tar and a smell of the sea. Lighter notes of citrus, fresh mint, tropical fruits, grainy cereals and scrubbed pine. Late on, energetic and expressive hints of creamy toffee, lemon zest, chopped mint and sweet young oak.
Palate: Exquisitely powerful taste. Sweet and firm to start, with strong saltiness, then drying and vinegar-sharp. A complex of simple tastes: salt and vinegar on fresh chips wrapped in paper; mints; wax; fresh wood; old crates.
Finish: Long, spicy and smoky. Dusty, sharp and intensely sweet, then deeply pungent and cleansing, with long tannins and warmth.
