The grapes were handpicked from 3 vineyard blocks resting on soils with high clay content and good drainage, ideal terroir for producing high quality chardonnay grapes. In the cellar, they were sorted before being subjected to a combination of whole-bunch and destemmed pressing programs. Only free-run juice was used to produce this wine which was enzymatically settled before being moved into 300-litre French oak barrels for fermentation. 50% of the total blend was fermented from indigenous yeast strains with the other 50% being inoculated fermentations. Fermentation lasted between 20 and 35 days before the wine left to rest for an 8-month barrelling period in 15% new oak and 85% second-fill French oak. Malolactic fermentation was avoided creating a wine with great zestiness and good natural acidity. The wine undergoes bentonite fining (making it vegan friendly). Bottled at 13.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Floral notes of orange blossom. Whiffs of lemon peel and orange rind as well. Subtle nutty undertones as the wine opens up.
Palate: Zesty and fruit forward entry with plenty of citrus notes greeting you, in particular oranges and nectarines. A lovely flinty minerality.
Finish: Refreshing acidity with a slight salinity. The finish leaves you salivating eager for another sip.
Journey's End Vineyard is owned by the Gabb Family, originally from Shropshire in the UK. The Gabb family took control of the wine farm, surrounded by 20ha of vineyards, in 1995. By 2011 they had grown the estate to 120ha.
