The grapes for the Erika Obermeyer Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 were hand-harvested from a 19 year old vineyard planted on deep granitic soils in Firgrove, Stellenbosch. Fermented in open-top barrels with 3–4 punch-downs per day. Matured in first (85%) and second-fill (15%) 300-litre French oak barrels for 24 months. Bottled at 14%.
Nose: Nuances of concentrated red and black fruit, tilled earth and cedar wood combined with oak spice.
Palate: The palate shows intensity and depth underscored by chalky ripe tannins.
Finish: A long, silky and savoury finish. An exceptionally crafted full bodied wine.
Erika Obermeyer graduated with a BSc and BSc Honours in Wine Biotechnology in 1998 and was appointed as Assistant Winemaker at Kleine Zalze in Stellenbosch in 1999. In 2005 she accepted a winemaker position at Graham Beck Wines achieving the position of Cellar Master of Still Wines. In 2016 Erika decided to go it alone and established Erika O Wines, a boutique winery specifically aimed at producing small batches of hand-crafted, distinctive and terroir specific wines from selected vineyards across the Western Cape winelands.
