Grapes for The Back Roads Petite Sirah (also known as Durif, after the scientist who cultivated it) were selected from a single vineyard growing on the slopes of “Matoppie” in the Franschhoek Valley. Hand-picked and chilled in the cold room overnight. Destemmed the following day and transferred to 500kg fermentation bins or barrels for fermentation which lasts for 7-12 days at a maximum of 28°C. After fermentation, the wine receives a racking to remove solids and a SO2 addition before being laid down for a 20-month maturation period in used (5-8 year old) French oak barrels. At 17 months the final blend is assembled and allowed to mature for a further 3 months prior to bottling. Bottled at 14.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)

Nose: A powerful grape-like aroma with loads of blackcurrant, pepper and tobacco leaf.

Palate: Dense with intense flavours of dark chocolate, black fruits, crushed pepper and cassis with a healthy dose of tannins and bright acidity.

Finish: An elegant long finish, with lingering notes of blackberries and cassis.

Named after its 3 founders, Kevin Swart (Black in Afrikaans), Raymond Ndlovu (Elephant in Zulu) and Jacques Wentzel (Vintner), Black Elephant Vintners is a wine company that produces and distributes premium wines from selected vineyards and wineries in the Franschhoek valley.
