Pinot Gris isn't an abundant grape planted in Stellenbosch and although a lot of the wine drinking world think and assume it is a 'white grape', it is in fact a lovely coppery/dark rose skinned grape. With this being the case, this wine is fermented like a red. In 2021 the fruit was destemmed in its entirety and fermented in open top fermenters. The juice was lightly pumped over or punched down throughout fermentation. The fermentation on skins gives the wine a beautiful rose coloured hue. 2021 had such nice developed tannins that 6 days on skins was sufficient to give ample texture to the wine. The wine spent 6 months in a combination of concrete and neutral 500-litre barrels before being bottled at 11.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)

Nose: Complex with red fruit notes as well as subtle savoury, with notes of cured meats like prosciutto.

Palate: Fruit forward entry with a savoury mid-palate. Notes of raspberries and strawberries on entry, followed by prosciutto.

Finish: Medium length with an interesting salinity making you eager for another sip.

Mick and Jeanine started Craven Wines in 2014, sourcing fruit from single vineyard sites in and around Stellenbosch and making "site-specific, honest wines". Originally from Australia, they met whilst working in Sonoma, California, before both moving to Jeanine's hometown of Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2011. They are both fantastic in the vineyard and in the cellar where their approach is to tread gently and extraction is gentle.
