The vineyards for the Hartenberg Occasional Riesling 2020 were given a green harvest at véraison (when the grapes are ripening and develop a slightly more yellow/golden hue and soften, bunches that still have bright green grapes that are hard are pruned and dropped) to ensure evenly ripe fruit. This was followed by rigorous selection of each bunch, prior to picking, thereby ensuring that only sun-kissed and botrytised grapes were crushed. About 50% of the incoming grapes showed the positive presence of botrytis. The grapes were hand-picked at daybreak, de-stemmed, gently crushed and underwent 12 hours skin contact at 15°C followed by light pressing. The free-run juice was split from the press juice and fermented at 16-18°C. Matured for 8 months on fine lees. The wine was given a filtration prior to bottling. Residual sugar 7.5g/l. Bottled at 12.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Inviting aromas of honey and candy floss with a steely flinty minerality.
Palate: Lemon and lime on entry with a well weighted slightly creamy texture on the mid-palate.
Finish: Crisp refreshing acidity with a lingering flinty minerality.
