Situated in the fertile Elgin valley, the picturesque vineyard site inspired the creation of Saurwein Chi (means life force and also stands for Chiuta, an African rain god) Riesling 2024. 60% of the blend’s fruit comes from Casey’s Ridge Vineyard, Elgin on loamy and very rocky red slate soils (Riesling clones WR110F and vineyard was planted 2011). The other 40% of the blend De Bos Vineyard, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley on decomposed Bokkeveld shale and sandstone (Riesling clones 110 & 239 AB and vineyard was planted 2011). 2024 was a great vintage with long, cool ripening. Grapes were hand-picked, cooled, then hand-sorted, destemmed and pressed. Spontaneous fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, which lasted about 4 weeks until optimal residual sugar balance was achieved at about 11.5g/l. The wine was prepared for bottling and bottled after 2 months in tank. 12,400 bottles were produced. Bottled at 11%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Aromatically expressive with layers of lime blossom, green apple, and white peach, complimented by delicate floral notes of jasmine and a touch of crushed slate minerality. Hints of honeycomb and citrus zest add complexity.
Palate: Bright and precise, with a lively medley of lime, lemon curd, and Granny Smith apple flavours. A silky texture is interwoven with subtle notes of white nectarine and a faint touch of honeyed sweetness, balanced by a taut mineral edge.
Finish: Long and clean, with persistent citrus and flinty minerality. The zesty acidity adds focus and vibrancy, leaving a refreshing and crisp impression.
