The maiden vintage of this wine was produced in 2019 in honour of the birth of winemaker, Franco Lourens', first-born daughter, Lua Ilse. 100% Grenache Noir was harvested from a single dryland bush vine vineyard in Piekenierskloof. 25% of the grapes went through whole-bunch fermentation after which the wine was matured in older 500-litre barrels for 10 months. No yeast, acid, or enzymes were added. Bottled at 14%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Cranberry, raspberry, pomegranate, fynbos, earth and white pepper.
Palate: The palate is full but balanced – pleasingly ripe fruit, bright acidity and densely packed tannins.
Finish: Concentrated with a dry finish.
Lourens Family Wines is run by winemaker Franco Lourens. He sources fruit from Stellenbosch, Swartland, and in particular Piekenierskloof for his wines. Franco grew up in Paarl and studied at Elsenburg Agricultural College. He then worked at David Finlayson Wines (where he made his first experimental wines) and later joined Chris Alheit as assistant. He is particularly enamoured with the unique flavours and textures of Cape Verdelho and Grenache Noir, both of which feature heavily in his two blends.
