Bakermat, meaning “birth-place” or “cradle” in Dutch, pays homage to Joostenberg, home of the Myburgh family for multiple generations. Made from a blend of 39% Syrah, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Mourvédre and 8% Touriga Nacional, this is the premium red wine from the estate and every effort has been taken to ensure that it is a genuine expression of the Joostenberg terroir. All the grapes were hand-picked. Cabernet Sauvignon was de-stemmed while the Syrah, Mourvedre and Touriga Nacional were partially destemmed. Fermentation took place in open-topped tanks. Maturation occurred in 500-litre French oak barrels (20% new) for 20 months. Bottled at 13.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)

Nose: Fruit forward with enticing aromas of black berries, tobacco and dried herbs.

Palate: On entry, sumptuous plums, red currants and prunes welcome you. Mid-palate reveals more savoury undertones with hints of earthiness and dried herbs like oregano.

Finish: Well integrated tannins with lingering notes of tobacco and sweet spice.

Joostenberg Wines is a 5th generation family business situated in the Muldersvlei district of Stellenbosch that produces an exclusive range of wines with an emphasis on individuality, sustainable farming and natural winemaking. In keeping with this commitment and a desire to produce wines that reflect their origin, all the vineyards are farmed organically. A minimal intervention approach is followed in the winery. Wines are fermented using “natural” yeasts and additives are kept to a minimum. Full organic status was achieved in 2012.
